What does a Manufacturing Engineer typically do?

  • A Manufacturing Engineer develops plans to optimize machines, process layouts and creates new production lines.
  • Works with OSHA standards to ensure safe machine operation and overall plant safety protocols are met
  • Researches and retrofits new production machines into production lines
  • Develops Standard Operating Procedures for the production team and updates user manuals and machine documents

Career Track for an Manufacturing Engineer

A Manufacturing Engineer will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university. Professionals entering this field will ideally start with internships exploring different areas of production operations. Engineers beginning their careers are encouraged to focus on an area they’re especially interested in such as process engineering, quality or med device engineering.  Engineers interested in pursuing leadership or executive roles are encouraged to obtain an MBA to aid in their career advancement, although not required. For leadership roles, focusing on developing communication and interpersonal skills is strongly encouraged. After several years of successful project completion, an Engineer can advance into a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, Team Lead, or  Manufacturing Manager. From here, the person can be promoted to VP of Engineering and other executive level roles.

As a Manufacturing Engineer, you’ll get to:

  • Support maintenance team with the diagnosis and resolution of equipment issues related to hydraulics, circuits, and controls
  • Incorporate continuous improvement and lean initiatives for process improvement in manufacturing
  • Create and utilize production and quality-related metrics to identify areas for improvement
  • Develop written work instructions and forms for recording, evaluating, and reporting quality, reliability, and production data
