What is a Mechanical Engineer?

Solves very complex solutions for manufactured products using analytical, math and software skills.  This person will work with their team to determine products physical limitations and create solutions for a new or enhanced solutions.  This person will typically use various software tools including 3D computer-aided design, ANSYS, strength of material software, and test engineering products such as LabView or related tools.

The Mechanical Engineer will meet regularly with manufacturing personnel, designers, test lab specialists and other engineers to review projects, timeline, budgets and R&D results.

A Mechanical Engineer will typically possess a Bachelor’s Degree, Mechanical Engineering from an EBET accredited college. The professional will typically start in a Mechanical Design Engineering, Test Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering role to gain well-rounded knowledge. 

From here, the Engineer may pursue a technical subject-matter expert field and develop a deep understanding of engineering practices withing a particular niche or product type.  They may become an expert in machine engineering, medical device engineering, or materials such as composites or metals. If the professional enjoys working within a 3D CAD package such as SolidWorks, etc., they can be a leader in design concepts and and automate and improve the design software for project teams.

Alternatively, the engineer may prefer to pursue a leadership and management role and elevate to project lead, team lead and department manager. Through strong communication and leadership growth, the person can become an Engineering Manger, Engineering Director and VP of Engineering. 

Regardless of ultimate career goals, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering is desirable for those wishing to learn and exercise advance engineering theories and concepts.  Over time, this advanced degree will be helpful for gaining much more knowledge as well as compensation and responsibility increases.
