Here are highlights from the webinar:
Why is a focus on workplace mental health important?
- Mental health affects all employee’s ability to focus, complete tasks, and interact with teammates, etc.
- If leaders want to retain and nurture their employees to be more productive, devote time and resources to this plan.
Where do leaders begin with this topic?
- Start with your Employee Assistant Program (EAP) and develop a comprehensive plan from there.
- Be mindful of the individual scenarios of employees as everyone is affected differently by work and life events.
- Consult an expert on the topic.
- Run your plan by other managers at different levels and front line employees.
- Regardless of your company’s current Workplace Mental Health Plan status, it requires ongoing attention and updates to adapt to our changing environment, especially this year.
How do you suggest implementing a plan to leadership?
- It’s your job as a manager to flag this issue on your employee’s behalf.
- This is critical for the health of the company.
- Don’t try to do this all on your own. Pull in an outside expert to help get started.
How do I better understand how my employees are really doing?
- Open the door by empathizing with the employees by sharing your own experiences about how you’re struggling with recent events.
- The utilization of EAP is less than 10%, so make sure everyone is aware of this service.
- If you see a decrease in work performance, this is an opening for a productive conversation.
- There is nothing wrong with connecting with employees on a personal, human level.
How does a leader continuously communicate about available resources?
- Communication is the biggest failure in regards to mental health.
- Handbooks and general emails are easily forgotten and overlooked.
- Leadership should communicate on a personal level; be as interactive as possible.
- Don’t rely on one method and keep this at the front of mind.
- Senior leadership, including CEO’s, involvement in communicating to all employees is critical.
